Orthodontics is part of the real life of children, adolescents and adults; it’s a speciality of dentology that concentrates on diagnostics, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities.

Functional orthopaedics of the jaws:

Dental braces are used for patients with deficiencies or disorders in size or position of the jaws, that’s why they are only indicated for children and adolescents in ages and stages of active growing.

At these ages, the treatment is generally carried out using removable orthodontic appliances, which can have two specific purposes, early correction of problems with badly positioned teeth or, for more severe cases, preparing the patient, so that the subsequent corrective treatment is less complicated.

If the problem lies in the growth of the maxilla or the mandible, in cases of deficient or excessive growth in young patients (girls under 13 or 14 and boys under 16 or 17 years), who are still growing, functional orthodontic appliances for the jaws can be used before fixed appliances or in combination with them in order to stimulate the muscles and obtain better skeletal and dental relations, these devices are generally removable, but should be used as much as possible to obtain an adequate correction.

Fixed orthodontics

Fixed orthodontic appliances are most frequently used. These mainly consist of wires and brackets. The bracket is part of the fixed appliance that is bonded to the teeth and in which the wires are inserted.

Brackets can be made out of metal or ceramics. The latter, also called aesthetic brackets, are in the same colour as the teeth.

By using a fixed appliance that remains in the oral cavity the patient cannot remove the fixed orthodontic treatment or move it around.

Only your dentist or orthodontist may decide whether you need an orthodontic treatment, based on diagnostic elements such as complete clinical and dental history, clinical exam, cast mould of your teeth, radiographies and photo's.

In accordance with the diagnosis, your orthodontist or dentist decides if you need orthodontic treatment and develops a treatment plan that suits your needs.

Once all the patient information is gathered, a case study is carried out in order to determine what types of appliances will be used in this case to be able to reach the proposed goal.
